General Do-Jang Etiquette

School guidelines should be followed at all times. The do-jang is a formal training hall of higher learning where students of all ages and physical ability can learn the skills of Taekwon-do to greatly improve their lives and help them achieve their fullest potential.
Your conduct and behavior, regardless of your rank, must always reflect the respect that the do-jang deserves.
Respect Your Do-Jang
  • Students should greet their instructors and fellow students when entering the do-jang.
  • Students should take out their attendance card each day. Periodically, students should review their cards to make sure information is correct.
  • Students must wear an MMTKD uniform (do-bok) and belt during class.
  • Students must salute the flags before entering and leaving the mat. This gesture shows respect and acknowledges that this is a Taekwon-do school and a place of learning.
  • If a student’s belt is loose or uniform needs adjusting during class, the student should turn their back to the flags before making any adjustments.
  • Drinking water, chewing gum and eating are not permitted during class.
  • All students must work to keep the do-jang and the dressing rooms clean.
Respect Your Instructors
  • Students must bow to Master Marr, Master Bayless, and all instructors in greeting. Bowing has no religious connotations and is solely a gesture of respect. Respect is an integral part of Taekwon-do.
  • Students must address Black Belt instructors as “Sir” or “Ma’am”.
  • Be on time for class. If you are late, kneel at the edge of the mat until the instructor motions you in.
  • If you must leave while class is in progress, ask the instructor for permission and leave without disturbing the class. Salute the flags before leaving the mat.  Kneel and await permission to re-enter.
  • Students should always stand properly and be attentive during class. Students should not stand with hands on hips, arms crossed, or leaning against walls or equipment.
  • When practicing, students should practice with sincerity and diligence.
  • When receiving direction or correction from the instructor, students should respond “Yes, Sir/Ma’am.”
  • There shall be no free fighting without an instructor’s permission and supervision.
  • If you are going to be absent, please notify the school out of courtesy as soon as possible.
Respect Other Students
  • Students should show respect to others regardless of rank. Students of higher rank should lead by example in their conduct.
  • Conversations during class should always be limited.
  • Students must remove watches and jewelry (except for flat wedding bands) before taking class. These may cause injury to the student and others and might become damaged.
  • The dressing rooms are solely places to get changed. Ethical self-conduct must be maintained.
  • Students must always observe the safety of others.
  • Losing self-control, particularly during sparring, is unacceptable. Unnecessary roughness against a weaker or smaller person (bullying) is not permitted.
  • Intentional excessive contact is prohibited.
Respect Yourself
  • Hygiene is important. Students should begin each class with a clean do-bok. It is not hygienic to wear the same uniform class after class without cleaning it.
  • Toenails and fingernails should be cut short, and the body and feet should be kept clean.
  • Avoid bringing valuables to the school. MMTKD is not responsible for personal property.
  • All students who spar must comply with the do-jang’s protective gear policy and safety rules.
